Project Description

Located at the intersection between the busy Victoria Street and the quieter Jalan Kledek, the empty site (approximating two shophouse units) was envisioned as not only the new home for two close-knit adult brothers, but also as a weekend family home that could accommodate their visiting parents. In considering the potentially disparate needs, wants, haves and have-nots of the brothers and their parents, how could the architecture of their new home be designed in such a way to unite the conflicting programmes, yet at once respecting their individual privacy?

The premise of the project was thus based upon the concept of a Tetris to allow for separate living and activity spaces which are at once connected to one another via a shared family space. Individual spaces are, as a result, kept as private as possible while the family space features a more open and porous ambience.
